Crafts to make using keepsake jewelry

Krafty Kris’s super special Christmas crafts to make…

Being the crafty gal I am, I am always looking for new ideas for crafts to make for Christmas. Like most crafty people, I’m also incredibly sentimental and I stock pile “collections” and “keepsakes” like you would not believe!

I had a jewelry box filled with costume jewelry that belonged to my grandmothers. Of course, everyone in the family was interested in the jewelry that was worth something, but nobody cared much about the costume jewelry although it was beautiful, it was “worthless” so to speak, except for its sentimental value.

I always wanted to display the jewelry in some way, but it took me a while to figure out just how to go about that. Then it hit me. I arrived at a solution one day when I was pondering over crafts to make for Christmas.

I was thinking about making a frame with a lighted Christmas tree in the center but I didn’t know what to use to decorate it. Then, the thought came to me. Wouldn’t it be beautiful to fill the outline of the Christmas tree with the bits and pieces of costume jewelry I had? Thus I came up with a beautifully sentimental craft to make for Christmas -- the jewelry tree.

The jewelry tree is an easy craft to make. Just get a frame and a thin board that fits inside the frame (you can also use a shadowbox). Cover the board with felt and draw the outline of a Christmas tree in the center. Drill small holes in the board and using a strand of Christmas lights, insert a light into each hole. You can staple the strand to the back of the board to hold it in place.

Using a hot glue gun, glue jewelry onto the board to fill in the tree. (Break the backs off of earrings and broaches so they will lay flat). Line the outer edges of the frame with rick-rack, lace or beads and the edge of the tree with beads. And there you have it! An easy and sentimental craft to make for Christmas!
