Christmas Crafts: Wonderful Projects for the Entire Family

I always have so many craft ideas for kids and my kids love to make stuff! The problem we run across is that we don’t know what to do with all the nifty crafts we make. Sometimes we sell them though they are hard to part with.

The wonderful thing about Christmas craft ideas for kids is that the Christmas crafts can be used to decorate at Christmastime and can be stored away the rest of the year rather than cluttering up the house with enormous amounts of craft projects.

One of our favorite craft ideas for kids was the idea of the flowerpot cowboy centerpiece for our dining room table. We started out with flowerpot cowboy that is pictured here, then decided to make a new character each year, so now we have a collection of flowerpot characters that line our hearth during the Christmas season.

Flowerpot characters are good craft ideas for kids because they are so easy to make. You use a flowerpot (any size will do) and you paint it with spray paint. Once the paint is dry, you can paint the face on the character and use straw, yarn, or artificial hair to make hair for the flowerpot.

Sometimes we use a piece of cloth to make a headscarf, glue on a paper hat (like the cowboy hat in the picture), or use hair ribbons to top off the character and give it some personality. We’ve even made “do rags” out of Harley Davidson fabric for our biker flowerpot character and our elf has a pointed hat made from felt.

Depending on the craft ideas for kids that we come up with, we may use a scrap material or ribbon to make a tie, felt to make a collar, or silk flowers to line the bottom of the flowerpot character. Sometimes we just stencil a design around the base.

Flowerpot characters are a lot of fun to make. They are good craft ideas for kids of all ages and can even be given to family and friends as Christmas gifts.
