Christmas Crafts to Make: Reindeer in a Snow-Covered Field

Reindeer prancing through a snow-covered field are great Christmas crafts to make with the entire family!

We've all tried those pipe-cleaner/ googly-eyed reindeer you hang on the tree in our search for Christmas crafts to make as a family. They're an old standby because they're easy, inexpensive, and – best of all – you can eat them later. They're great for young kids, but if you want Christmas crafts to make with the whole family, you're going to have to take them a step further. These fields are great Christmas crafts to make because they involve the entire family, but they're not too tricky for you to do on your own if it's just you and Junior!

Materials

Candy canes
Brown pipe cleaners
Small googly-eyes
White glue (and/or a glue gun)
A block of florists' foam (that green stuff you can get in the floral crafts' aisle)
White "fuzz" to use as snow – cotton batting, pre-packaged "snow" for Christmas villages, etc. Even cotton balls will do in a pinch.

Make It!

Begin by making a few of those candy cane reindeer (odd numbers usually look better, but you're looking for Christmas crafts to make, not a professional centerpiece – right?). In case you need a reminder:

Twist the center of the pipe cleaner around the hooked part of the candy cane a couple times. Fashion the ends into antlers. Glue googly eyes onto either side of the hook. If you're feeling really creative, stick a tiny red pom-pom on the end of one.

Gently push the candy canes into the florists' foam. They should go in without breaking and stand straight up. Have older children use white glue or a glue gun to artistically layer the cotton "snow" over the foam. In the end, you shouldn't be able to see any green, and you should have what appears to be a snow-covered field full of candy cane reindeer!

Decorating Ideas

These are great Christmas crafts to make even if you just leave it at that, but why not get creative? Pull out the craft supplies and let the kids get busy making North Pole signs, Christmas trees, frozen ponds, or whatever else they come up with. Your snowy field will transform into a snowy village! Remember, you never have to stop when the directions tell you to – that's the great thing about finding Christmas crafts to make!
