Enjoy Making These Simple Christmas Decorations with the Whole Family

These stackable snowmen Christmas decorations bring the whole family together for some crafting fun

You don't have to buy Christmas decorations this year -- make your own! These simple, fun, and adorable snowmen add pizazz to any seasonal decor. Make them simple or dress them up to your liking. Either way, these snowmen are simple enough for young children or complex enough to satisfy an adult.

Stackable snowmen

Snowmen are a favorite among Christmas figures. I have countless snowmen ornaments and snowmen figurines of all shapes and sizes. When I think about my next Christmas craft, snowmen are an obvious choice. I spent some time in my local craft store, perusing the aisles for inspiration. Finally, I found it.

A simple idea that's fun to make! Begin your craft by visiting your local supply store for the following items:

-- 1 large white Styrofoam ball

-- 1 medium white Styrofoam ball

-- 1 small white Styrofoam ball

-- 1 long, wooden skewer

-- Glue

-- 1 black sheet of felt

-- 1 small, wooden block

-- 2 googly eyes

-- 1 sheet of red felt

-- 1 brown pipe cleaner

-- 1 orange pipe cleaner

-- 5 small, black pon pons

What to do

Begin your snowman by stacking the 3 balls, largest to smallest. Once together, run the skewer down the center of the 3 balls, holding them together. Be sure that the skewer does not poke through to the bottom.

Use your scissors to gently scrape the rounded bottom off the large ball. This provides your snowman a flat surface to sit on his own. Once the body is ready, follow these steps to decorate him.

1. Glue the body together to support the skewers and disable the snowman from spinning on the skewer.

2. Glue your googly eyes on the small ball at the top. Between the eyes and slightly below them, glue a 1-inch piece of orange pipe cleaner sticking outward (like a carrot nose). Finally, glue the 5 small pon pons in the arrangement of a smile on his face (like coal). Your face is done.

3. Cut your brown pipe cleaner in half and bend to form his arms. Glue on either side of the middle ball.

4. Cut your red felt in a strip the full length of the sheet and about 2 inches thick. Tie around his "neck" between the top and middle ball. Fray the ends of his scarf by snipping it in a few places along the edge.

5. Finally, what's a snowman without a top hat? Measure a circle that is 1 1/2 inch bigger than the top ball. Cut this circle out of the black felt for the base of his top hat. Glue to his head. Cut 2 more strips of black felt to cover your small wooden block. Glue to the block and glue the block onto the black circle.

Your Christmas centerpiece stands out with this Snowman. Or use it as an extra on the mantle or as part of a snowman family. Use various sizes of Styrofoam balls to make a family of snowmen ranging from dad to baby. Everyone in your family can dress up their personal snowman to look like them.
