Make a Christmas Pinata This December

Transform Your Christmas into a Multicultural Celebration with a Christmas Pinata

If you are looking for a fun Christmas craft project that is easy enough for little kids and doesn’t break your budget, why not try making a Christmas pinata? Pinatas are always a great way to liven up a celebration and kids and adults all enjoy taking a swing and grabbing the treasure.

What's a Pinata?

Think of a Christmas piñata as a festive oversized Christmas stocking. Pinatas are a staple of Mexican celebrations, and making a Christmas piñata can provide your children with a fun Christmas craft project to later be used as part of a multicultural Christmas celebration.

Easy and Fun

Making a piñata is easy enough even if you do it the old-fashioned way and arrange strips of newspaper dipped in a flour mixture around a blown up balloon. For this Christmas craft project we are going to take a shortcut. No dealing with messy wet flour no matter how fun it can be for young children. You’re probably already fretting over your kitchen being transformed into a mini bakery during the Christmas season, so we’re going to make a mess-free Christmas piñata.

Getting Started

To make a Christmas piñata you will need several colors of crepe paper, glue, and a brown paper grocery bag. Decide what design you want your Christmas piñata to be. You can choose, Santa, a snowman, or a Christmas tree. Depending on what theme you pick, you will need any number of colored crepe paper rolls. If you pick a Christmas tree theme, you will obviously need lots of green crepe paper.

This Christmas craft project is relatively inexpensive, so let everyone make their own Christmas piñata. If you decide to make a Santa Christmas piñata, you can even make Reindeer piñatas out of smaller brown paper lunch bags.

It’s a good idea to outline a design onto your grocery bag first. If you know how to draw, you can make the design yourself. If not, look through children’s coloring books and pick a picture. Enlarge it on a photocopy machine and cut it out. Next trace the outline onto a paper bag. Fill the bag with Christmas candy and other treats and fold the bag down and staple it shut. Cut the crepe paper into strips about four inches long. Place the eraser end of a pencil onto the crepe paper and fold the paper onto it. Dip it into glue and press onto your paper bag. Arrange the different colors of crepe paper depending on the design you chose.

Making a Christmas piñata is a fun and easy Christmas craft project. Try making a Christmas piñata this December. You will probably have just as much fun making the Christmas piñata as you will breaking it.
