Who Else Wants a Gingerbread House This Holiday Season?

A Gingerbread House Is the Perfect Christmas Craft

I remember when I was little, nothing fascinated me more than seeing a gingerbread house set up as a centerpiece. There was just something so cheerful about them. Cute little houses that didn't just look amazing, but that were edible treats too... What more could you ask for?! If you're anything like me, your love of gingerbread houses hasn't dimmed. Here's how you can make your own.

Skip the Scratch

I remember back in the heyday of her baking days, my grandma used to make her yearly gingerbread house from scratch -- and that meant all parts and pieces of it. It was a project that literally took days. Nowadays, thankfully, it takes much less time to build a gingerbread house and it's a heck of a lot easier.

If you don't like the idea of spending days in the kitchen, head out to your local home and kitchen store and buy a kit. There are dozens of gingerbread house kits to choose from.

Whether you want to make your own gingerbread and just need a template to use or you want a “pre-fab” gingerbread house that you just have to put together, there's a kit out there for you. In fact, a simple Internet search for “gingerbread house kit” will supply you with dozens of results.

A Word to the Wise

For those who do purchase the “pre-fab” kits and not just a pattern, we have some advice for you. The candy and icing included with pre-fab gingerbread house kits tend to be a bit sub-par if you don't purchase a high-end kit. Replace the gumdrops and icing included in the kit with higher quality items from your grocery store.

All the fun with half the effort! If only everything in life were so simple. By keeping the above in mind, you can have a gingerbread house centerpiece that will have your guests thinking you spent days in the kitchen.
